Grown-ish will end its run with the show’s upcoming sixth season, Freeform and series star Yara Shahidi announced Wednesday.
Shahidi, who plays Zoey Johnson on the comedy series, broke the news to fans in a video announcement on the Freeform YouTube page.
“I wanted to share the news with you guys, our day ones, that season six of Grown-ish will be our final season,” she said. “But don’t be sad, because we’re gonna do it up big.”
She added, “Your support over the last five seasons has really meant the world to us, the cast and crew, and we want to take the time to thank you all for the love and support that has kept us going.”

The Black-ish spinoff premiered in 2018, and followed Zoey as she went off to college. Shahidi’s former Black-ish co-star, Marcus Scribner, joined the spinoff in season 5. The cast also includes Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons, and Daniella Perkins.
In the final season, music artists Lil Yachty, Anderson .Paak, and The Free Nationals will all have guest roles. The Cal U crew will also celebrate the show’s milestone 100th episode.
In a statement Wednesday, series creator and executive producer Kenya Barris called working on the show a “joy and an honor.”
“We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series, and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement,” Barris said. “To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor.”
Season 6 of the series was announced earlier this year, But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to wrap Grown-ish was a creative one after the show’s storytelling began to lean toward a shorter shelf life.
The next season will now air in two parts. The first half will premiere this summer and the second half will air sometime in 2024.
Since its premiere, Grown-ish had also become a fan favorite, and was one of the highest-rated shows on Disney-owned Freeform.
Craig Doyle is showrunner. In addition to Barris, executive producers include Yara Shahidi, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins and Michael Petok.
The conclusion of the series will mark the end “-ish” franchise.
Black-ish ended its eight-season run on ABC in April 2022. The prequel series Mixed-ish aired for two seasons on ABC between 2019 and 2021. A spinoff called Old-ish starring Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis was also announced, but it ultimately did not move forward.
Over the years, Black-ish earned several NAACP Image Awards, a Peabody Award, and received multiple Emmy nominations, making it the most successful ish series.
