Cem Kurosman was Wayne’s publicist at Blue Note Records. He did not give a cause of his death in a statement. Wayne died in Los Angeles on March 2, 2023.

Wayne’s love for music started at an early age. His Blue Note biography states that he started playing clarinet when he was 16 years old, before moving to the tenor and saxophone in college. In 1952, he attended New York University and received a degree as a music educator.

After graduating from college, Wayne was a jazz pianist alongside Horace Silver for his two years in U.S. Army.

Wayne worked with many jazz musicians and groups during his entire career, from the late ’50s to the early ’80s. He was a member of Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet. Later, he co-founded Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. Wayne was awarded his first Grammy Award in 1973. His most recent award came in 2022.

Wayne worked with many rock ‘n roll groups in the late ’90s/early 2000s, including Carlos Santana, and the Rolling Stones. In 1999, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Berklee School for Music along with David Bowie.

Later, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by NYU in 2010, and the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.

CNN reports that Wayne is survived by Carolina, his daughter Mariana, and Miyako, his two daughters, and Max, his grandson.
