Suspect shot dead in an officer-involved shooting on Tucson’s Southside

Shortly before 1:00 p.m. yesterday, officers from Operations Division East (ODE) responded to the 6700 block of E. Calle Mercurio for the reports of a home invasion.

During their investigation, officers learned that the adult-male suspect was armed with a firearm and had left the area prior to police arrival. One of the victims was treated for minor injuries.

As the investigation continued throughout the day, officers gathered information that the suspect was located at a residence in the 1000 block of E. 32nd St.

Members of the Tucson Police Department Hostage Negotiation Unit and Special Weapons and Tactics team responded to the residence to assist after a search warrant was obtained. Officers established communication with the suspect, who had barricaded himself inside the residence.

The suspect eventually exited the residence, armed with a handgun, and briefly spoke with officers. The male retreated back into the residence, and officers continued their negotiation efforts.

Just after 3 a.m., after several hours of communicating with the suspect, a TPD SWAT officer discharged his department- approved rifle, striking the suspect. Officers ensured the area was safe and began rendering aid to the suspect who was pronounced deceased at the scene. A firearm was recovered near the suspect. No officers or other community members were injured in this incident.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has been activated to handle the criminal investigation of this incident. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is the lead investigating agency of the team.

Members from TPD’s Office of Professional Standards will be conducting a separate, but parallel, investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred. As is standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, all findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
