During a shooting incident inside a Walmart in Florida City, one person lost their life, and another individual sustained injuries.
The police responded swiftly and apprehended one person in connection with the incident.
Miami-Dade Police has assumed control of the investigation, which occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, at the prominent retailer situated at 33501 S. Dixie Highway.
As a result of the incident, two individuals sustained gunshot wounds, with one person injured in the foot and the other in the abdomen.
Moreover, a third person experienced a panic attack due to the situation and required medical attention.
Among the victims, one is currently receiving treatment at Jackson South Medical Center. Furthermore, it is suspected that one of the individuals involved in the incident is an employee of Walmart.
Subsequently, the authorities verified that one of the victims had succumbed to their injuries, and they have detained one person in connection with the incident.
MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta held a news conference on Wednesday evening, providing additional information about the situation.
He stated, “What we do know is that there was a confrontation between two groups. Within these groups, three individuals on each side were involved in some form of altercation with each other.” The situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which one individual produced a firearm and discharged it, resulting in the injury of the two individuals.”
Zabaleta said the surviving victim is listed in stable condition.
Police spent approximately 45 minutes clearing the Walmart premises. During this time, several witnesses were observed waiting outside the store.
According to law enforcement, initially, three suspects were spotted leaving the vicinity. Authorities are actively collecting more information and ensuring the scene’s security for further investigation.
In response to the incident, Walmart issued the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened by what took place in our Florida City store, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones. The store is closed at this time. We will work closely with local law enforcement through the course of their investigation and will refer further questions to police.“
As of Wednesday evening, the store has remained closed, and there is currently no indication of when it will reopen.
