On Tuesday afternoon, a tornado made contact with the ground in eastern Colorado. At 5:19 p.m., the NWS characterized the tornado as “significant and highly perilous,” advancing eastward at a pace of 15 mph.
The tornado alert is effective until 5:45 p.m. for the west-central region of Yuma County.
The NWS stated that this tornado-producing thunderstorm is likely to stay mainly over rural zones in west-central Yuma County, emphasizing the potential for heavy rainfall to obscure the tornado’s visibility.
Tornado warning timeline
At 4:31 p.m., a tornado warning was initiated for the east-central region of Washington County.
The NWS reported that a severe thunderstorm with the potential to generate a tornado was situated over Otis, approximately 12 miles west of Yuma, and was progressing southeast at a speed of 15 mph.
By 4:55 p.m., a meteorologist from the NWS had verified video evidence displaying a tornado on the ground, located to the east of Hyde.
By 5:04 p.m., the National Weather Service validated that the tornado close to Yuma was progressing in an easterly direction at a speed of 20 mph.
