Judge Tanya S Chutkan (born – Tanya Sue Chutkan) is a Jamaican-American Lawyer (Attorney) and Jurist well-known for the US District Court for the Columbia District as a district judge. She also serves as a judge in charge of the criminal trial of ex-United States President Trump for his efforts to change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. This includes what happened before the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

Chutkan’s career as a lawyer involves working for a couple of law firms. To start, Between 1987 and 1990, Chutkan worked at the private law firm Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells). Then, from 1990 to 1991, she was employed at the law firm “Donovan, Leisure, Rogovin, Huge & Schiller”. After that, for 11 years (1991 – 2002), she was a trial lawyer and supervisor at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. In the year 2002, Chutkan became part of the law firm “Boies, Schiller & Flexner”, and became a partner in the year 2007. She focused on handling complex civil legal cases, particularly antitrust class action suits.
On December 19, 2013, Pres. Obama picked Chutkan to be a judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. This spot was made according to 104 Stat. 5089. She talked with the United States Senate Judiciary Committee on February 25, 2014.
The committee agreed with her nomination by using a voice vote on March 27, 2014. On June 3, 2014, the United States Senate approved her nomination with a 54–40 vote. Chutkan has had many notable cases throughout her career. To start, Public.Resource.Org got into trouble because they shared copyrighted rules about building and fire safety too much, in February 2017. Different groups, like the American Society for Testing and Materials, said it was wrong. Chutkan, a judge, said Public.Resource.Org did something bad. They asked a higher court called the Washington D.C. Circuit to look at it, and later in the year 2018, the higher court changed its mind because of a rule about fair use. In March 2022, Chutkan made a new decision. She said it’s okay to copy some rules a little bit if it’s fair, but you can’t copy other rules. ASTM and others didn’t agree and asked the court again.
During the 2017 summer, Chutkan was in charge of the Hina Alvi and Imran Awan fraud case. In Garza v. Hargan (2017), Chutkan told the Office of Refugee Resettlement that a girl they were taking care of could have had an abortion. This decision was changed at first but then changed back before it didn’t matter anymore in the United States Supreme Court. In December 2017, Chutkan helped 2 more young people who were going to have babies. They were in ORR custody and wanted an abortion. In March 2018, Chutkan said a lot of young people in ORR custody could have abortions.
On June 8, 2018, Chutkan stopped a person with 2 nationalities, from America and Saudi Arabia, who was said to join a group called ISIL. They couldn’t leave until June 20. On March 7, 2019, Chutkan said that Betsy DeVos, who works for the United States government and takes care of education, did something wrong. She waited too long to make rules about special education that are called “Equity in IDEA” regulations.
On April 26, 2019, Chutkan gave Maria Butina a punishment of 18 months in jail. This was because Maria Butina worked secretly with the Russian government in the United States without telling anyone. On November 20, 2019, Chutkan said the United States Department of Justice couldn’t do something new that they wanted to do. They were trying to use a different way to give a deadly injection, but Chutkan found problems with it. The United States Court of Appeals changed Chutkan’s decision afterward.
On November 9, 2021, Chutkan said no to ex-President Donald Trump’s wish to keep information away from the House Select Committee that was looking into what happened at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Chutkan has been in charge of trials for over 30 people who were part of the attack on the Capitol. She is known for giving long punishments.
