Hal Foster Biography
Harold Foss “Hal” Foster is an art critic and historian from the United States. During the span of six years, starting from 1991 to 1997, he dedicated his time and knowledge to teaching at Cornell University. Since then, he has found his place within the Princeton faculty, where he continues to share his expertise.
Foster graduated from Princeton University, Columbia University, and the City University of New York. He published The Anti-Aesthetic: Essays on Postmodern Culture in 1983, which became a fundamental work in postmodernism. In Recodings (1985), he championed a postmodernist perspective that addressed its avant-garde background while also commenting on contemporary culture.
Foster relocated to New York City after graduating from Princeton, where he worked for Artforum from 1977 to 1981. He subsequently worked as an editor at Art in America until 1987, when he became the Whitney Museum’s Director of Critical and Curatorial Studies.
Foster’s children’s book, The Mink’s Cry, was published in 1982 by Bay Press and was formed by a friend from Lakeside School. The Anti-Aesthetic: Essays on Postmodern Culture, edited by Foster, was released the following year by Bay Press and became a major classic of postmodernism.

Foster joined the editorial board of the magazine in October of the same year, and he was still on the board as of 2011. In 1997, he joined the faculty of Princeton University’s Department of Art and Archaeology, where he studied as an undergraduate.
