A 9-year-old boy from the Bronx was shot and killed during a robbery in the Dominican Republic, just 30 minutes after arriving in the country with his father for a vacation.
Gioser Luís Feliz was shot in the head when a gang of robbers attacked the car he was traveling in, after leaving Santiago’s Cibao International Airport.
The robbers followed the family from the airport and opened fire when the driver refused to pull over after going through a toll booth. The suspects were driving a rented car.
Gioser was taken to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead. The gunmen fled the scene, but they were caught less than 24 hours later.
Luis Ángel Vargas Brito, Derlin Javier Mercado Martinez, Cesar Junior Ulloa Cuevas, José Manuel Almonte Santana, and Elian Martínez Sánchez were all arrested and subsequently confessed to the shooting.
It is not clear whether the shooting was a targeted attack or a random act of violence. The police are still investigating the incident.
The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, expressed his sadness and anger over the incident and said that justice must be served.
He also announced that the suspects had been arrested and assured that the government would ensure that justice was done.
