On Friday, a scene of chaos unfolded at Union Square as a large and disorderly crowd assembled, reportedly gathering for a giveaway event hosted by YouTuber Kai Cenat.
The crowd eventually turned rowdy, and officers could be seen taking people into custody.
The situation escalated with individuals tearing down construction barricades and hurling objects, some even targeting the responding police officers.
Additionally, people were observed climbing on top of the roof that covers the entrance to the Union Square subway station.
Amidst the tumultuous gathering, one individual was seen activating a fire extinguisher. The crowd had apparently convened for a giveaway event hosted by livestreamer Kai Cenat.
Authorities estimated that around 2,000 people had gathered for the giveaway, and the rowdy behavior erupted at approximately 3 p.m. Cenat had intended to distribute several PlayStation consoles as part of the event.
In response to the situation, the NYPD has requested a significant presence, leading to several individuals being detained.
People were observed standing atop cars and trucks.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of severe injuries at this time. As a precautionary measure, subway trains are bypassing the Union Square station. While much of the crowd gathered there appeared to be peacefully moving around, authorities are actively managing the situation.
This is a developing story that will be updated when more information is available.
