The three-part docuseries debuts in August, and will examine “the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention and became the world’s first trial by TikTok,” per the official description.
The trailer notes that millions of people watched, commented and shared information about the trial online — and some of that information was false.
“Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores this global media event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society,” the official synopsis reads.
Depp sued Heard for $50 million, saying she defamed him in a 2018 op-ed column in The Washington Post. Heard counter-sued Depp for $100 million over comments his former lawyer made calling her allegations a “hoax.”
The trial was held in Fairfax, Virginia. It began in April 2022 and the verdict was handed down on June 1, 2022.
Jurors awarded Depp $15 million dollars. The jury said Heard should receive $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. Heard appealed the verdict, but later settled the lawsuit.
Depp v. Heard premieres Wednesday, Aug. 16. on Netflix.
