The head of the nation’s espionage agency, a seasoned college president, and prominent women in finance. A wealth of records, including his calendars, show that Jeffrey Epstein’s social circle was larger than previously thought years after his conviction for sex offences.
The papers reveal that in 2014, while Epstein was the deputy secretary of state, William Burns, the CIA’s director since 2021, had three meetings planned with him. After their first meeting in Washington, Mr. Burns went to Epstein’s apartment in Manhattan, according to the report.
Epstein was jailed in 2008 for a sex offence involving a minor girl and was registered as a sex offender. The recently made public papers reveal that despite not being included in Epstein’s “black book” or flight logs, several prominent people interacted with him after that time. The publication said that there had never before been a report on the records, which included countless pages of communications and schedules from 2013 to 2017.
The WSJ said that it was unable to confirm that all of the planned meetings really took place, and the papers do not disclose the sessions’ objectives.
The majority of the people named in the records that the Journal spoke to said that Epstein’s riches and connections were the main reasons for their trips. After spending time for his prior sex offence conviction, several people thought he had recovered.
Burns encountered Epstein roughly ten years ago as he was getting ready to depart the agency, said CIA spokesperson Tammy Kupperman Thorp. She said: “The director knew nothing about him other than the fact that he was presented as a financial services industry specialist and given generic guidance on transition to the private sector. No connection existed between them.
Burns, a career diplomat, met with Epstein in 2014 when he was the deputy secretary of state. The records state that two nighttime meetings at Epstein’s townhouse in September as well as a luncheon were set for August at the Washington headquarters of the law firm Steptoe & Johnson. Epstein arranged for his driver to pick up Burns from one of the sessions and deliver him to the airport.
According to Thorp, Burns remembers having a short encounter with Epstein in New York and being introduced to him in Washington by a common acquaintance. The director doesn’t remember speaking with Epstein again or getting a lift to the airport, she said.
“The following month, in October 2014, Mr. Burns resigned from his position at the State Department to take the helm of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a think tank. He managed the Carnegie Endowment up to President Biden’s nomination of him to be the CIA director in early 2021, according to the WSJ.
Epstein was accused in the press in 2006 of molesting Florida females as young as 14 years old. In 2008, Epstein struck a deal with prosecutors that enabled him to escape federal charges after probes by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the police. Instead, he admitted to soliciting and obtaining a kid for prostitution, registered as a sex offender, and completed around 13 months of a work-release program.
Epstein’s case received widespread media coverage, with multiple publications documenting allegations of abuse from young girls and underage women in both the United States and other countries. A number of lawmakers returned Epstein’s gifts to them in 2006, and several of his colleagues made an effort to disassociate themselves from him. Leslie Wexner, a retail magnate and millionaire, said in 2007 that he had severed relations with Epstein. Despite some bankers allegedly continuing to meet with Epstein for several years after 2013, JPMorgan Chase & Co. closed Epstein’s accounts in 2013, the Wall Street Journal reported.
“Virginia Giuffre accused Epstein in public in 2015 of sexually abusing and trafficking her as a kid and forcing her to have sex with powerful individuals, including Prince Andrew. The story stated, “Prince Andrew has refuted the accusations and last year reached a settlement in Ms. Giuffre’s sex assault case.
