James Toliver Craig, a 45-year-old dentist from Colorado, is accused of poisoning his wife and the mother of his six children by adding arsenic and cyanide to her protein drinks in order to end her life and begin a new one with his girlfriend.
Toliver was detained on Sunday on one count of first-degree murder for allegedly poisoning his wife, Angela Craig, who was declared brain-dead on March 18 and later removed from life support. Angela Craig was proclaimed dead on March 18.
A thorough arrest affidavit claims that Craig allegedly flew his orthodontist lover from Texas to Denver while his 43-year-old wife was in critical condition in the ICU. The two had allegedly exchanged “sexually explicit emails” prior to the purported flight. The charges detailed the couple’s rocky marriage, their financial struggles, and Craig’s claimed evil scheme to kill her.
Detective Bobbi Olson of the Aurora police noted in the affidavit, “In overall, our investigation has proved that James has gone to tremendous efforts to try and end his wife’s life. Investigators claim that on February 27, Craig set up the secret email address jimandwaffles.com, which he only used at a computer in his now-closed Summerbrook Dental Group.
According to court documents, “he investigated numerous ‘undetectable poisons’ while using this account.” Searches for “How much pure arsenic will kill a human?” and “Is arsenic detectable in autopsy” were found in his Google history. The crystalline metalloid arsenic was finally bought by him from Amazon.com and delivered on March 4 to the family’s $1.3 million home, according to the authorities.
Angela Craig returned from her trip to Utah the following day. The affidavit states that on March 6, the couple exercised together, and James gave her an extra serving of protein in a pre-workout smoothie because she was feeling lethargic.
She was sent to the hospital after complaining of feeling faint and lightheaded hours later but was eventually released.
Angela Craig texted her husband, “I feel drugged. James Craig poisoned his wife roughly five years previously, according to information provided to police by her sister, because he didn’t want her to stop him from committing suicide.
He texted his wife, “With our past, I know that must be a trigger.” “For the record, I did not give you any drugs. I am, nevertheless, really concerned. Before I went, you truly appeared pale. even like your lips.”
Her spouse allegedly placed an order for the poison oleandrin that evening, but it wasn’t delivered.
The dentist allegedly ordered additional poison shortly after returning to his computer, according to investigators. He allegedly ordered a hurried delivery of potassium cyanide on March 8, and it showed up to his dental practice on March 13.
According to investigators, his wife’s readmission to the hospital on March 9 coincided with his lover’s two-day visit, and she remained there for five days.
The affidavit states that on March 15, Angela Craig was readmitted and “began to suffer from a major seizure,” one day after she was released from the hospital. She was declared brain dead and taken immediately to the intensive care unit. The following day, James Craig’s mistress left for Colorado.
Investigators were informed by her sister Toni Kofoed that James Craig had “many affairs with several women” and had been “addicted to pornography since he was a teenager” and that the couple’s marriage had always been “tumultuous.”
During the previous 16 years, Angela Craig has informed her sister multiple times that she intends to leave him, but he has consistently persuaded her to stay. The filings claim that the pair was likewise broke and about to file for bankruptcy a second time.
Angela Craig confided in her sister about her husband’s recent spending of more than $2,000 on gambling during a trip to Las Vegas.
When James Craig’s business partner Ryan Redfearn reported his concern that the dentist had poisoned his wife, police opened an inquiry.
James Craig was called to account by Redfearn for the delivery of cyanide to the dentist office. According to rumors, Craig said his wife begged him to place the order, possibly so she could kill herself. The document claims that Ryan then instructed James to stop talking and hire a lawyer.
