During a recent meeting with the Murrieta Valley Unified School Board, Tony Thurmond, the California state superintendent of public instruction, expressed concerns regarding a proposed policy. This policy would require schools to inform parents about any changes in their children’s gender identities. Thurmond argued that implementing such a policy could potentially jeopardize the safety and well-being of students who identify as LGBTQ+ individuals.

According to Thurmond, it is regrettable that numerous LGBTQ+ students find themselves in circumstances where they may face harm or abuse, even within the confines of their own homes, if they choose to reveal their sexual orientation or gender identity prematurely. Additionally, it was observed that the Attorney General’s Office in California has initiated civil rights investigations into school districts that have implemented comparable policies. In light of this, the speaker advised the board to take measures to protect itself from any potential liability or scrutiny that may be deemed unnecessary.
During the school board meeting held on Thursday night, a policy was approved by a majority vote of 3-2. One of the school board members, Nicolas Pardue, expressed his support for the policy, emphasizing its importance in providing parents with advanced notice or information.
The parental notification policy of the Chino Valley Unified School District in Southern California was recently investigated by Rob Bonta, the attorney general of California.
