Birmingham firefighter Jamal M Jones injured in a targeted shooting incident at Station 9 in Alabama

In Birmingham on Wednesday morning, a distressing incident unfolded at a fire station where two firefighters were shot.

The firefighters were engaged in their routine morning maintenance activities at Station 9 on 27th Street North in the Norwood area.

At the time, the bay door was open, and one or more individuals entered the building, as shared by Police Chief Scott Thurmond.

Sources confirm to FOX3, firefighters were identified as Jordan Melton and Jamal M Jones.

The shooting occurred inside the station at approximately 8:30 a.m., as reported by Captain Orlando Reynolds.

Reynolds stated that the two firefighters were taken to UAB Hospital in a serious condition. Currently, the police suspect that this shooting incident was specifically targeted.

As of now, no individuals have been apprehended in connection with the incident. Thurmond expressed deep concern, describing the situation as highly troubling.

Mayor Randall Woodfin released the following statement:

“Our hearts are extremely heavy in the wake of the shooting of two Birmingham firefighters this morning.

These are two dedicated servants of our community. Now, we must return the favor of service by providing them and their families the comfort, care and support they need. I also ask that you join me in lifting up the entire Birmingham Fire and Rescue team as they rally around their comrades during this very difficult time.

We ask for your patience as Birmingham Police continue their investigation. Know that we are using every resource at hand to find answers and justice for those harmed.”
