This morning, the Oakland County Prosecutor, KAREN D. McDONALD, filed charges against 44-year-old Gregory Keyier-Deniro Davis in relation to the tragic shooting that resulted in the death of his ex-girlfriend, a 40-year-old woman from Sterling Heights and the mother of his child.
Davis is facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, felon in possession of a firearm, felonious assault, and four counts of felony firearm second offense.
The incident took place on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at a car dealership in Royal Oak Township, where the victim was employed. It is alleged that Davis followed the victim to the parking lot and used his vehicle to block hers.
As the victim attempted to seek help by exiting her vehicle, Davis pursued and shot her while she was running away. He then proceeded to shoot her again at close range using a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun, which was reportedly obtained from another individual.
Tragically, their 10-year-old child witnessed the entire incident from the passenger seat of the victim’s vehicle. Following the shooting, Davis purportedly aimed the gun at additional individuals and discharged it. Later that same day, Davis turned himself in to the police and is currently in custody at the Oakland County Jail.
Oakland County Prosecutor McDonald expressed her deep concern over the distressing and sorrowful nature of the incident. She highlighted the alarming statistics that indicate an average of 70 women lose their lives every month due to gun violence inflicted by their intimate partners in the United States.
This tragic event took place within a place of business, with other employees in close proximity. The prosecutor’s office has taken the decisive step of charging the individual with first-degree murder, the most severe charge according to Michigan law. They are committed to pursuing a vigorous prosecution against the alleged perpetrator for their purported actions.
First-degree Premeditated Murder is a serious felony offense that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Assault with Intent to Murder is another felony offense that can result in a sentence of life imprisonment or a specified number of years. Felon in Possession of a Firearm is a felony offense punishable by a maximum of 5 years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine. Felonious Assault, also a felony offense, carries a maximum penalty of 4 years imprisonment and/or a $2,000 fine. Additionally, Felony Firearm Second Offense mandates a mandatory imprisonment of 5 years.
The arraignment is scheduled to occur at 12:15 pm in the 45th District Court located in Oak Park. It is important to remember that criminal charges are allegations, and every person is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
