On 07/30/2023 at 1:14 a.m., Delaware County 911 Dispatch received a call for multiple people shot in the area of S. Hackley St. and E. Willard St. The Muncie Police Department along with Muncie Fire/EMS responded to the scene.
Initial information received was that there was a large party at this location.
Due to the number of victims and nature of the incident, multiple agencies were contacted to assist. These agencies assisted at the initial scene, at IU/BMH Hospital, and also with continued incoming calls.
One 30-year-old Joe Smooth has been confirmed deceased. Multiple victims are receiving treatment at our local hospital and more critical patients were airlifted to other facilities.
Neil Gifford, a spokesperson for Ball Memorial Hospital and IU Health, stated that at approximately 1:30 a.m., the hospital received a notification about an incoming influx of patients.
According to Gifford, a total of 19 individuals arrived at the emergency department. Among them, 4 were transferred to other medical facilities, 13 people were admitted and stabilized, and 2 individuals received treatment and were subsequently released.
All scenes are contained and there is no immediate threat to public safety. This is an ongoing investigation.
