On Thursday, a shooting occurred within a Mariano’s store located in Evergreen Park, resulting in the death of one individual and the arrest of another involved in what the police referred to as a “domestic-related” incident.
According to authorities, they responded to a report of an active shooter at the store situated at 2559 W. 95th St. just after 9 a.m. Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael D. Saunders stated that upon arrival, officers found several individuals in the parking lot before proceeding inside.
However, no gunshots were being discharged at the time.
Saunders stated, “Officers swiftly cleared individuals from the front of the building and proceeded with their search.
At that moment, we believed that there was an active shooter inside the premises.” It was during this search that they discovered an employee, believed to be a 21-year-old woman, in a storage area, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Unfortunately, the woman, identified as 21-year-old Jailene Flores was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that no gunman was found during the investigation. Based on surveillance footage, Saunders mentioned that the recorded videos depicted the woman walking away from a man within the store and proceeding towards a back room before the shooting occurred.
Law enforcement received reports indicating that the victim had been engaged in a prior domestic altercation during her employment at Amazon in the nearby area of Oak Lawn.
The suspect involved in that incident was identified as her boyfriend, leading the authorities to issue an alert regarding the vehicle mentioned in the report, according to Saunders.
Subsequently, Chicago police discovered the mentioned vehicle on the North Side of the city and apprehended a “potential suspect” who was armed with a firearm, as stated by Saunders.
The residents of Evergreen Park were notified through an alert from the village, stating that the shooting incident was believed to be related to a domestic situation and reassured that “there is no threat to the public.”
The area remains an active crime scene, and the village urged everyone to avoid the vicinity, as stated in a tweet shortly before 10 a.m. Law enforcement responded to the scene, with multiple police cars visible outside the storefront. Onlookers gathered outside the store as well.
Individuals with any information regarding the shooting are requested to contact the Evergreen Park Police Department at (708) 422-2144.
