According to Kentwood Police, it is believed that a 2-year-old child discovered an unsecured loaded firearm and tragically shot himself.
Jikya Reddick, the mother of the child named Kiaire McCoy, described him as a joyful child who had a strong bond with his older brother.
Kiaire was known for his infectious laughter, and his mother expressed that he quickly captured the hearts of those around him.
He was quite expressive and had a deep affection for his mother,” Reddick shared.
The family is currently making arrangements for the funeral, and they have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds. Reddick also mentioned that her son’s organs were donated to help save others’ lives.
“He made the decision to take his own life and through organ donation, he is now giving others a chance at life,” Reddick expressed.
The mother’s former boyfriend has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident. Markus Nevills Jr. was presented in court on Monday and is now facing the involuntary manslaughter charge.
According to the police, the firearm involved in the shooting belonged to Nevills Jr. He is currently held at the Kent County Correctional Facility and awaits further court proceedings. Reddick explained that the child discovered the handgun hidden between the couch cushions, and she was unaware of its presence until after the tragic incident occurred.
